Valheim no build cost server: free building setting

Tick No build costs or pick the Hammer preset on the Valheim World page so players build without materials. It applies at the next start.

To let players build for free, open the World page and tick No build costs in the Difficulty card. Choose Save and restart the server. Building pieces then need no materials. It is a good setting for a creative build server. More about the game: Valheim servers.

Two ways to do it

  • The switch No build costs. The wiki says pieces need no materials. Players still need to discover recipes as usual.
  • The preset Hammer (no build costs). The wiki says Hammer mode gives no build cost on anything built with the hammer. It does not change crafting at a station. Taking down a log pile or stone pile in this mode gives nothing back.

Turn on No build costs

  1. Open the World page.
  2. In the Difficulty card, tick No build costs (1).
  3. Choose Save (2). The panel says: “Saved. The game reads these when it starts, so restart the server to use them.”
  4. Choose Restart at the top of the server page.

Use the Hammer preset

  1. In Difficulty, open Preset (1) and choose Hammer (no build costs). The picture is cut off before it.

What each preset sets is not listed in anything we read. After the next start, read the line “The world remembers: …” on the World page to see what the world holds.

Turn it off again

A world remembers the modifiers it was started with. Unticking a switch later does not remove it from the world. Check the line “The world remembers: …” in the card.

  1. Untick No build costs, or set Preset to None.
  2. Tick Clear the world’s own modifiers first.
  3. Choose Save and restart.

The world then gets exactly the settings on the page. Buildings already made stay in the world.

By hand

The panel writes -setkey nobuildcost or -preset hammer on the start line. Both are in the game’s own manual. Put -modifier words after -preset.

If it does not work

  • Players still pay for pieces. Restart the server. A saved change is read at the next start.
  • No Save button. Your role may not allow editing the startup settings.
  • It will not turn off. Tick Clear the world’s own modifiers first, save and restart.
  • Crafting still costs materials. Hammer mode and the switch are about building pieces, not crafting at a station.
