VEIN server requirements: memory, CPU and disk

How much memory and disk a VEIN dedicated server uses: 9.5 GB to install, about 3.1 to 3.7 GB with nobody on, 4.5 GB with one player. More players need more.

Updated , checked on VEIN 0.025 Hotfix 3

A VEIN server needs about 10 GB of disk space and 4 to 5 GB of memory for a small group. Memory grows as more players join. These figures were measured on Loafhosts servers on build 0.025 Hotfix 3. Ramjet Studios, who make VEIN, publish a larger figure for Windows.

What was measured on Loafhosts

WhatFigure
Disk space after install9.5 GB
Install timeabout 3 minutes
Memory with nobody onabout 3.1 to 3.7 GB
Memory with one player on4.5 GB
Time until the server is readyabout 1 minute

These are Linux servers. A server shows in the game’s server browser about 30 seconds after it is ready, because its first listing attempt fails and the next one works.

What Ramjet says

Ramjet’s server page says the server “requires at least 8GB of RAM to start”. It says a Windows Server 2019 machine used 8 GB with no players on. It also says memory needs grow as more players connect, and that settings and mods change the figure.

Ramjet’s page, written for Windows, says the server files take about 5 GB. It says to plan for saves and later updates.

A Loafhosts server measured 9.5 GB after install on Linux. Plan for the larger number.

The two sets of figures differ because they come from different systems. Use the Loafhosts figures for a Loafhosts server. Use Ramjet’s figures if you run the server yourself on Windows.

More players, more memory

Memory is the limit that matters most. One player added about 1 GB in the measurement above. That is one reading, not a rule. A busy server with many players and a long-running world will use more.

CPU

Neither Ramjet’s page nor the measurement above gives a CPU figure, so none is stated here.

Disk space over time

The save is one file that the game writes while it runs. The panel keeps copies of it before uploads, version changes and put backs, and backups take space too. Leave room beyond the install size.
