Lag on an Enshrouded server comes from too little CPU or memory for the number of players. Keen Games, who make the game, give the figures: the server needs about 4.4 GB of RAM idle and up to 100 MB more for each player, and it should not use more than 6 GB. Compare your plan with those figures first.
Checked on the 0.9 server. Enshrouded 1.0 is released on 15 October 2026. Keen’s figures may change with 1.0.
What Keen Games say
- Memory. About 4.4 GB of RAM idle. Up to 100 MB more per player. In total no more than 6 GB.
- CPU. For 4 to 6 players, Keen recommend 6 cores (12 threads) at 3.2 GHz or better, with 16 GB of RAM on the machine. For 16 players they recommend 8 cores (16 threads) at 3.7 GHz or better.
- Each slot costs performance. Keen say each slot increases the load on the server. If CPU or RAM is the bottleneck, lowering the number of slots helps.
- Saves. The server writes a save file every few minutes (Keen’s save article says 10). Keen say a save is between 1 MB and 100 MB. Worlds with many big bases are closer to 100 MB.
- Network. Keen recommend 2 Mbit/s of upload for each player.
Use Keen’s numbers for planning, not what an idle server happens to show.
In the ArthOS panel
- Look at the load. CPU Load and Memory Load are cards in the server header on every server page. Judge them by how they move with players, not by one reading.
- Look at the players. Open the Players page. The figures show Players and Bases. A full server with many bases is the heaviest case.
- Lower the player slots. Open the Startup page, set Player slots to the number you really use (1 to 16), then restart. See player slots.
- Check your plan. If you are near Keen’s figures for your player count, your plan may be too small. Compare its memory and cores with the list above. To resize, open your server list and use the server’s menu, or open Billing, then Services. Choose Customize. This needs the permission to order and pay.
- Read the log. Open the Console and look for errors around the time of the lag. See server logs.
- Restart when nobody is on. A restart is safe and it applies any change you made. It also downloads the newest server if Update on start is on.
What this guide does not claim
Keen do not publish any other cause of lag. A restart is not documented as a fix for lag, and no setting in the Config Editor is documented to speed the server up. Be wary of advice that says otherwise.
If the lag is on one player’s side only, it is probably their connection or their computer. A server problem shows for everyone on at the same time.
If it does not work
- Everyone lags at the same time. The server is short of CPU or memory. Lower the slots or take a bigger plan.
- Only one player lags. Ask them to check their own connection and computer first.
- Lag started after a game update. Make sure the server is on the same version as the game. See update an Enshrouded server.
- You need an exact answer. Contact Loafhosts support with the time of the lag and the number of players.
