Turn radiation off on a Rust server

Switch off the Radiation row in the Rust Config Editor so monuments stop poisoning players. What changes for rad suits and pills, and how to restart.

Updated , checked on Rust October 2026 update

To stop monuments from being radioactive, open Config Editor, switch Radiation off in the Gameplay group, choose Save and restart the server. Radiation is on by default. With it off, players can walk into any monument without a rad suit or pills.

What radiation does

The Rust Wiki says radiation appears in or near monuments, in round zones, each with a strength. A player inside a zone gets radiation poisoning. The screen gets fuzzy, the player loses health and can die, and above a level of 100 the player cannot run. The wiki lists the common ways to stop it: radiation resistant clothing, anti-radiation pills, medical syringes and water.

This is a community wiki, so check the details in game.

In the ArthOS panel

  1. Open your server and choose Config Editor. The file is server/rust/cfg/server.cfg.
  2. Type radiation in Search…, or look in the Gameplay group for Radiation (1). Its help reads “Monuments are radioactive.” The switch is on at first.
  3. Switch it off.
  4. Choose Save (2).
The Rust Config Editor with the Gameplay group open, showing the Radiation row and the Save button
  1. Radiation row
  2. Save
  1. The panel says “Saved. Restart the server to apply the changes.” Choose Restart now. If the server is stopped, the change applies when it starts.

To turn radiation back on, switch it on again, Save and restart.

What changes for players

ItemRadiation onRadiation off
Monuments with radiationPlayers are poisoned inside the zonesNo poisoning
Scientist SuitCuts radiation by 50%, per Facepunch’s item pageNot needed for radiation
Anti-Radiation Pills“Will lower your radiation level”, and may cause extreme dehydrationNot needed for radiation

Pills and suits stay in the game as items. They lose their main use.

Not checked as of 11 October 2026: whether the setting also stops radiation that comes from other sources, such as radioactive water.

By hand

When you host Rust yourself, add this line to server/<identity>/cfg/server.cfg, where <identity> is the name you gave with +server.identity, and restart:

server.radiation false

Use server.radiation true to turn it back on.

If it does not work

  • Players are still poisoned. The server has not restarted since you saved. Restart it.
  • The row shows On after a restart. The change was not saved. Switch it off, choose Save, and check the banner says “Saved.”
