DayZ stamina settings: change sprint and stamina limits

Change how fast DayZ players run out of stamina with the StaminaData values in cfggameplay.json. Turn the file on, edit the numbers, restart.

Updated , checked on DayZ 1.29

DayZ’s stamina values are in cfggameplay.json, in a group called StaminaData. Turn the file on, change the numbers, and restart. Nothing else is needed, and no mod.

Read how cfggameplay.json works first if this is your first time with the file. More about the game: DayZ servers.

In the ArthOS panel

  1. Open Config Editor. In the Gameplay group, turn on Use cfggameplay.json and save.
  2. Open Files, then mpmissions/<your map>/cfggameplay.json (1).
  3. Find "StaminaData" under "PlayerData". Change the values (see below).
  4. Choose Save File, then restart the server.
The mission folder in Files, with cfggameplay.json listed
  1. Open cfggameplay.json

The values

These are the defaults in Bohemia’s file, with Bohemia’s descriptions.

KeyDefaultWhat it does
staminaMax100.0Maximum stamina. Bohemia warns that setting it to 0 may produce unexpected results.
staminaMinCap5.0Smallest size the stamina cap can shrink to. Setting 0 may give unexpected results.
staminaKgToStaminaPercentPenalty1.75Multiplier for how much maximum stamina a player’s load takes away.
staminaWeightLimitThreshold6000.0Stamina points (divided by 1000) that do not count toward the weight penalty.
sprintStaminaModifierErc1.0Rate stamina is used while sprinting upright.
sprintStaminaModifierCro1.0Rate stamina is used while sprinting crouched.
sprintSwimmingStaminaModifier1.0Rate stamina is used while swimming fast.
sprintLadderStaminaModifier1.0Rate stamina is used while climbing a ladder fast.
meleeStaminaModifier1.0Stamina used by heavy melee attacks and evasion.
obstacleTraversalStaminaModifier1.0Stamina used by jumping, climbing and vaulting.
holdBreathStaminaModifier1.0Rate stamina is used while holding breath.

A modifier of 1.0 is normal. Because a modifier changes the rate stamina is used, a lower number should make it last longer and a higher number should drain it faster.

Example: sprint for longer

This keeps everything else as it is and makes upright sprinting use stamina at half the normal rate:

"StaminaData":
{
    "sprintStaminaModifierErc": 0.5,
    "sprintStaminaModifierCro": 1.0,
    "staminaWeightLimitThreshold": 6000.0,
    "staminaMax": 100.0,
    "staminaKgToStaminaPercentPenalty": 1.75,
    "staminaMinCap": 5.0,
    "sprintSwimmingStaminaModifier": 1.0,
    "sprintLadderStaminaModifier": 1.0,
    "meleeStaminaModifier": 1.0,
    "obstacleTraversalStaminaModifier": 1.0,
    "holdBreathStaminaModifier": 1.0
}

Change only the values. Keep all the keys, the commas and the quotes. No comma after the last line.

By hand

  1. Add enableCfgGameplayFile = 1; to serverDZ.cfg.
  2. Edit StaminaData in the mission’s cfggameplay.json.
  3. Restart the server.

Stamina also affects how a player moves. The MovementData group has allowStaminaAffectInertia, which is true by default. When it is on, the stamina value influences the player’s inertia.

Bohemia does not describe how each modifier feels in game, so change one value at a time and try it with a character.

If it does not work

  • Nothing changed. Use cfggameplay.json is off, or the server was not restarted.
  • The server does not start. The JSON is broken, often a missing comma. Put back the Bohemia original and apply your change again.
  • Players still tire quickly. Heavy loads cut stamina through staminaKgToStaminaPercentPenalty. Lower it to reduce that penalty.
