Fix 'Flying is not enabled on this server' in Minecraft

Players kicked for flying? Turn on Allow flight in the Config Editor. When to turn it on, when to leave it off, and what the setting does not cover.

Updated , checked on Minecraft Java 26.3

The Config Editor searched for flight, showing the Allow flight row with its switch and the Save button.

A player who is kicked with “Flying is not enabled on this server” was in the air for too long. To stop that, switch Allow flight on in the Config Editor, save, and restart. Turn it on only when something on your server really lets survival players fly.

“Kicked for flying” is how players describe this kick. The words on the player’s screen are “Flying is not enabled on this server”. That text is the game’s own message for this check.

What the setting does

The Minecraft Wiki describes allow-flight as whether players can use flight in Survival mode by using mods. With it off, “players in air for at least 5 seconds get kicked”. The wiki marks that detail as needing more information.

  • Off (default). The server kicks a player it thinks is flying.
  • On. The server stops kicking for flying. It does not give anyone the ability to fly. Flight still has to come from somewhere else.
  • Creative mode. The wiki says the setting has no effect there.

The panel’s help for the row says: “Stop the server kicking players it thinks are flying. Turn on for mods that let players fly.”

When to turn it on

  • A mod gives survival players flight. The wiki names mods as the reason.
  • A plugin gives survival players flight. Read the plugin’s own page to see whether it needs this setting.

When to leave it off

  • Nobody on your server flies in survival. Then a flying player is likely using a cheat, and the kick is what you want.
  • Players are only in Creative mode. They do not need it.

In the ArthOS panel

  1. Open your Minecraft server and choose Config Editor.
  2. Type “flight” in Search… (1).
  3. Switch Allow flight (2) on. It sits in the World group.
  4. Choose Save (3). The banner says “Saved changes apply after a restart.”
  5. Restart the server.
The Config Editor searched for flight, showing the Allow flight row and the Save button
  1. Search for flight
  2. Allow flight switch
  3. Save

By hand

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Open server.properties in Files.
  3. Set allow-flight=true.
  4. Start the server. A change to server.properties needs a restart.

If it does not work

  • Players are still kicked. Check the switch is on and that you restarted after Save.
  • The kick says something about moving too quickly. That is a different check. It is about speed. The game rules player_movement_check (“Whether the server should check player speed.”) and elytra_movement_check (“Whether the server should check player speed when the player is wearing elytra.”) belong to it. Both are on by default. Change a game rule with gamerule <rule> false in the Console, and read the rule first with gamerule <rule>. Not checked on 26.3 as of 11 October 2026: which of these checks produces which kick message.
  • Players can fly but should not. Turn Allow flight off, and check what gives them flight: a mod, a plugin, or operator permissions.
