Rust has a built-in chat mute. A mute from mute <player> lasts until you run unmute. The panel also offers lengths: it passes the length to the game. Whether the game ends a timed mute by itself was not checked, so check the Muted tag later and use Unmute. In the panel, open the Players tab, find the player in the online list and choose Mute from the menu on their row. The player must be online.
In the ArthOS panel
To mute until you undo it:
- Open your server and choose the Players tab. The server must be running.
- In the online list, open the three-dot menu on the player’s row and choose Mute.
- A Muted tag appears beside their name. To undo it, open the same menu and choose Unmute.
To mute for a set time:
- Choose Open on the player’s row, or click the player on the Live map.
- In their window, choose Chat mute.
- Pick For 30 minutes, For 1 hour, For 12 hours, For 1 day, For 7 days or Until unmuted.
While the player is muted the button reads Muted. Its menu has Unmute.
If you do not see these buttons, your role does not have the permission to moderate players. Ask the server owner.
The mute is a chat mute. The game’s wiki describes it as muting a player’s messages in chat. Voice chat has not been checked.
By hand
Run these in the server console, over RCON, or in the F1 console as an admin:
mute 76561198123456789
unmute 76561198123456789
These commands have no length, so the mute lasts until unmute. Use the 17-digit Steam ID or the player’s name. The Steam ID is more exact. The player must be online.
When an admin runs mute, Facepunch’s wiki says the player is muted globally for the server. When a normal player types mute in their own F1 console, it only hides that person’s messages for them. That is a local mute, and it does not affect anyone else.
To see who is muted, look for the Muted tag in the panel’s online list.
Mute with a plugin
A plugin gives you more control. Better Chat Mute, from uMod, adds /mute, /unmute and /mutelist. Its own help gives this form:
/mute <player|steamid> "[reason]" [time: 1d1h1m1s]
The plugin keeps its own list of mutes and announces each one in chat. A mute with no time needs the betterchatmute.permanent permission, and the commands need betterchatmute.use. See Grant plugin permissions on a Rust server for how to grant them.
To add it, open the Plugins tab, search uMod for “Better Chat Mute” and choose Install. See Install uMod plugins on your Rust server.
Its last release was in April 2020. Not checked on the October 2026 update: whether it loads on your framework. After you install it, check that its row says LOADED. If it says NOT LOADED, see Rust plugins not loading after an update. The plugin keeps a separate list from the game’s own mute, so unmute with the same tool you used to mute.
If it does not work
- There is no Mute or Chat mute button. The server is stopped, or your role lacks the permission to moderate players.
- “Player not found”. The player is offline or the name does not match. Use their Steam ID.
- The player can still chat. Check that the Muted tag is on them. If it is not, run the mute again.
- A timed mute is still on: choose Unmute.
