Fix Steam Auth Timeout on a Rust server

Steam Auth Timeout means Rust could not finish its Steam login while joining. Player fixes that work most often, and what a server owner can check.

Updated , checked on Rust October 2026 update

“Steam Auth Timeout” means the Rust player’s game could not finish its login with Steam while joining. In most cases the cause is on the player’s side: Steam, their network or their game files. A server owner can only check that the server is running and whether the error hits one player or everyone.

Facepunch, the maker of Rust, publishes no list of causes for this message as of 11 October 2026, and does not document a server-side cause. The player fixes below come from a community troubleshooting guide. The server steps come from how the ArthOS panel works.

Who gets it?

Ask one question first: is it one player, or everyone who tries?

  • One player, or a few. Start with the player fixes below.
  • Everyone, all at once. Look at Steam’s status and your server, in the section after the player fixes.

Fixes for the player

Try them in this order, and start Rust again after each one. These steps come from a community troubleshooting guide, not from Facepunch.

  1. Restart Steam and Rust. Close both completely, start Steam, then press Play on Rust in your Steam library. Facepunch’s wiki gives Play in Steam as the way to start the game.
  2. Check that Steam is working. If Steam itself has an outage, the login cannot finish and only waiting helps. The community guide suggests a third-party status page for Steam.
  3. Leave the Steam beta. In Steam, open Settings, then Account, and next to Beta participation choose Change. Pick None - Opt out of all beta programs, and restart Steam.
  4. Verify the game files. In your Steam library, right-click Rust and open Properties. Facepunch’s wiki names the tab Installed Files. Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for it to finish.
  5. Repair Easy Anti-Cheat. Open Rust’s install folder, then the EasyAntiCheat folder. Right-click the setup program in that folder, choose Run as administrator, and press Repair service. See fix EAC disconnects for more.

What the server owner can check

The login happens between the player’s game and Steam. A server owner cannot change it, but you can rule out your own server.

In the ArthOS panel

  1. Open the server’s page and check that it is Running. A server that is still starting does not accept players. In the Console, wait for the line Server startup complete.
  2. Open the Players tab. The join line shows client.connect and the address. Ask the player to press F1 in Rust, paste the line and press Enter, so you know they use the right address and port. See connect to a Rust server.
  3. If everyone fails at once, wait a few minutes and try again. Then, if you can, use Restart with warning on the Players tab to restart the server once. A restart is not a known fix for this message. It only rules out a server that is not working properly. See restart with a warning.
  4. Read the last lines of the Console for errors, and note them down if you need to ask for help.

By hand

When you host the server yourself, read the server’s log for the time of the error. The cause of this message on the server side is not documented.

If it does not work

  • Only one player gets it, and the fixes did not help. The cause is on their side: Steam, their game files or Easy Anti-Cheat. Go through the player fixes again.
  • Everyone gets it, and Steam looks fine. Restart the server once, then check the Console for errors after the restart. If the same error comes back for every player, nothing in the panel changes it. Wait, and try later.
  • The server is not in the list. That is a different problem: see Rust server not showing in the list.
