Update a VEIN server to the latest version

A VEIN server updates when it starts, if Update on start is on. Restart it to update. Players must run the same version as the server, or they cannot join.

Updated , checked on VEIN 0.025 Hotfix 3

To update a VEIN server, restart it. A new server checks Steam for a newer build every time it starts. Players must run the same version as the server. When VEIN updates on Steam, the server needs the update too, or updated players cannot join.

Update now

  1. Open the Players page. The Version figure shows the version the server runs, for example 0.025h3. The h3 means hotfix 3. A hotfix is a small update that fixes problems.
  2. Choose Restart at the top right of the server page. To warn players first, see restart a VEIN server.
  3. Wait for the server to start.
  4. Open the Players page again and check Version.

The switch that controls it

The setting is called Update on start on the Startup page. Its help line says: “Checks Steam for a newer server build each time the server starts.” It is on for a new server.

The World page has the same switch under Game version, named Update when the server starts (2). Running now (1) shows the build the server runs. Its help line says: “Off keeps the files as they are, even on the current version.” Use either one. They change the same setting.

The Game version card on the World page with Running now 0.025h3 and the Update when the server starts switch on
  1. Running now
  2. Update when the server starts

If you turn it off, the server keeps the files it has. A restart does not update it, even if Steam has a newer build. Players who updated can then no longer join. Turn it back on and restart to get the update.

Players on a different version

Players join only when their game and the server run the same version. If the server is behind, or a player stayed on an old version, the join fails.

The Config Editor has a switch for this on its Game rules tab: Players on other versions. It lets players on another build join. Ramjet Studios, who make VEIN, warn that it will probably crash them. Use it only for a short time right after a hotfix, and turn it off again. Like the other game settings, change it while the server is stopped.

When an update goes wrong

Ramjet publishes a version on Steam for every hotfix. If a new build breaks your server, you can put the server on an earlier version and come back later. See stay on a VEIN hotfix version. Ramjet also has a test version, called a branch: see the VEIN experimental branch.

By hand

If you run the server yourself, the wiki gives this SteamCMD line, which updates the server files. Replace (dir) with your server folder:

steamcmd +force_install_dir (dir) +login anonymous +app_update 2131400 +quit

To follow a branch, add -beta (branch) after 2131400. A Loafhosts server does this for you.

If it does not work

  • The version did not change. Update on start is off. Turn it on and restart.
  • Players cannot join after an update. Their game version and the server’s do not match. See VEIN version mismatch.
  • The server crashed after an update. The game version may need a hotfix. Check the Crashes page, then see stay on a VEIN hotfix version.
