Give items to a player on a Rust server

Give a player an item on your Rust server from the Players tab, or with inventory.giveto in the console. How to find short names and fix the usual errors.

Updated , checked on Rust October 2026 update

To give a player an item, open the Players tab, find them in the online list and choose Give an item from the menu on their row. In the console, the command is inventory.giveto <player> <item> <amount>. The player must be online, and the server must be running.

In the ArthOS panel

  1. Open your server and choose the Players tab. The online list shows who is on and refreshes every 15 seconds. If it says “Nobody is on right now”, there is nobody to give to yet.

  2. On the player’s row, open the three-dot menu and choose Give an item. You can also choose Open to see the player’s window, then Give an item at the top, or Give item under Inventory.

  3. In the dialog, search with Find an item, narrow the list with Category, and pick the item from Items. You can type a name or a short name such as rifle.ak.

  4. Set the amount. The label shows how many make one stack. The box takes 1 to 100,000.

  5. Choose Give an item. The panel answers “Done.” The dialog stays open, so you can give another item. Choose Close when you are finished.

If you do not see Give an item, your role does not have the permission to control the game. Ask the server owner.

The panel cannot see what a player already carries, so it cannot show their inventory or change one slot. It can give items, and it can clear part of a player’s inventory: main, belt, wear or backpack. See Use the Rust live map to watch and manage players for the rest of the player window.

Item short names

The command needs the item’s short name, not the name you see in game. A few examples:

ItemShort name
Assault Riflerifle.ak
Woodwood
Medical Syringesyringe.medical

The panel’s item list does the lookup for you. For the full list, the community item list at corrosionhour.com has a Short Name column. If the panel says “The server’s item list could not be read”, type the short name into the Item box instead.

By hand

Run this in the server console, over RCON, or in the F1 console as an owner or moderator:

inventory.giveto "TomSmith" rifle.ak 1

The order is player, then item, then amount. Use the 17-digit Steam ID instead of the name when the name has odd characters. See Make someone owner or moderator on Rust to get F1 admin rights.

When it works, the player sees the item arrive and the game prints the chat line above.

This guide covers inventory.giveto, which gives to a named player, and spawnitem <item>, which puts the item on the ground where you are looking.

If it does not work

  • “Couldn’t find player!” The name or Steam ID matches nobody online. Check it with users or the online list, and use the Steam ID.
  • “Invalid Item!” The short name is wrong. Pick the item from the panel’s list, or check the spelling.
  • “Couldn’t give item (inventory full?)”. The player has no room. Nothing was given. Ask them to clear a slot, or give a smaller amount.
  • The panel’s menu has no Give an item. The server is stopped, or your role lacks the game control permission.
